Swami Sahajanand Saraswati
Father of the Peasant Movement in India
Born Naurang Rai into a Kanyakubja Brahmin farming family, he ranked 6th in all of Uttar Pradesh in the Middle examination before renouncing worldly life. After the early death of his wife, he left home on Mahashivaratri for Kashi, where he received initiation as a Dandi Swami.
Joining the freedom movement at Gandhi’s invitation in 1920, he was imprisoned multiple times for his activism. His association with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the founding of the All India Kisan Sabha in 1936 marked him as one of independent India’s most fearless voices for the landless farmer.
He passed away on 26 June 1950, in Muzaffarpur, leaving behind a vast literary legacy and a peasant movement that shaped modern India
